Sunday the 7th of June, Queens birthday long weekend at Genis stadium! On a blistery day, Preston played host to the bay-side team of Brighton.
With the Resi’s kicking off at 11am, the hosts were up against an undefeated Brighton line up. It was always going to be a tough game considering the conditions.Preston began well with several quick chances and Brighton also created a number of good goal scoring opportunities. Val was having a great game in the back for Preston. This courageous sweeper put herself on the line all day and saved a number of certain goals. Both sides had plenty of chances, but Brighton were the first to capitalise and were three nil up at half time.
The second half saw Preston dominating against the wind. Chances went begging by Suzan, Sarah and Malka who were combining well up front. Val continued to shine in the backline and Maree was having her best game yet. Rheem kept the home side in the game with some terrific saves but unfortunately, against the run of play, Brighton made the most of their chances and the game finished at 4-0. Well done Preston, particularly in the second half.
The Seniors kicked off at 1pm and the ‘wind Gods hadn’t given up’ as it was still very blistery out there. Preston started with the wind on their side, which made passing the ball very tricky. The visitors, keeping the ball low, created a couple of chances early but Preston’s custodian Nicole had everything covered. The home side looked very sharp and threatening, despite not having Bobby this week. Clearly dominating, Preston pressed and created many chances, however, with about half an hour played, the visitors played a square ball across the goal and tapped it in near the back post to make it 1-0 .Preston down one goal into the break.
The second half started with a similar tempo. The home side playing a very attacking game against the wind. Chances went begging from Casey, Lizzy and Di. Some great passages of play created by Julz and Jess D. Amy, the backbone of the lions defence kept everything at bay. Mid-way through the second half saw the best chance of the game with Oddo having a shot on the volley only for it to go straight to the keeper. Preston continued to create great passages of play but unfortunately the match finished at 1-0 with Brighton, excited and relieved to have beaten the home side. Unfortunately Preston didn’t have the ‘luck Gods’ on their side but should be commended on their effort and persistence. Let’s take the game to Geelong this week lions.
